What a replacement car key actually costs
The honest answer is that it depends on four things — and you can work out which bracket you are in before you call anyone.

It depends on what kind of key you have
There is no single price, and anyone who quotes one over the phone without asking what you drive is quoting you a trip fee, not a job. What you pay comes down to four things: the type of key, whether the car needs it programmed, the model year, and whether you still have a working key.
A plain metal key with no electronics is the cheapest thing in the trade. A transponder key has a chip in the plastic head that the car has to recognize before it will start. A proximity fob for a push-to-start car is a small computer with a battery in it. Those three sit at very different points on the scale, and the gap between the cheapest and the dearest is wider than most people expect.
Whether you still have a working key changes everything
This is the biggest single factor and the one most people do not think to mention when they call. If you have one key and want a spare, the existing key can usually be cloned, or the car put into a programming mode in minutes. If you have lost every key, the job changes shape: the immobilizer data has to be read and the key programmed from scratch, and on some makes there is a security delay built into the car itself that nobody can shorten.
The practical consequence is worth acting on today. If you are down to one working key, cutting a spare now costs materially less than replacing all of them after the last one goes missing, and it is the same single visit either way. That is most of what our mobile key cutting and programming gets called out for around Lawrence — not emergencies, but people who realised they were one lost key away from one.
What to have ready when you call
Four things get you a real answer instead of a guess: the year, make and model; whether the key is a plain blade, a flip key, or a fob you never take out of your pocket; how many working keys you have left; and where the car is sitting. Have proof of ownership to hand — registration or title, and the VIN if you can reach the windshield. Nobody can legally originate a key to a vehicle without it, and being asked is a sign you called someone who does this properly.
If the car is somewhere awkward — a parking garage, a work lot, the shoulder of Route 114 — say so up front. It rarely changes what the key itself costs, but it changes how the visit gets planned, and it is the difference between one trip and two.
Why the dealership is usually the expensive answer
A dealer can always make you a key, and for some very new or very unusual vehicles they are the only ones who can. But the dealer route generally means towing a car that does not start to a lot that may be a long way from where you broke down, waiting on a parts order, and paying a rate set by a service department rather than by anyone competing for the job.
The exceptions are worth knowing about honestly. Some manufacturers restrict key origination on their newest models, and a few require a dealer-only online authorization. If your car is one of them, an independent will tell you that on the phone rather than after arriving — and the fuller comparison between a dealer and a locksmith is worth two minutes before you commit to either.
