Locked out in the middle of the night

Plenty of businesses advertise 24 hours. Considerably fewer have someone who will pick up at 3am and a van that will actually roll. The difference tends to reveal itself as a phone that rings out, a call center that takes your details and never calls back, or a quoted arrival time that quietly triples.

The practical test is simple: call and see whether a person answers and can talk about your specific problem. Someone who asks what you drive, or which door, or whether you are somewhere safe, is someone who deals with this at night. Someone who only takes your number and address is a booking service, and you are one step further from a van than you think.

Overnight there are fewer vans covering the same area, so the one that takes your call may be finishing something on the other side of the coverage area. Winter compounds it: a cold snap in the Merrimack Valley produces frozen car locks, dead fob batteries and seized exterior deadbolts all in the same few hours, and everyone calls at once.

The upside is that the roads are empty. A drive that takes forty minutes at 5pm takes fifteen at 3am, and once a van is free it reaches you quickly. Ask for a window and ask to be called if it slips — at that hour, knowing whether to wait outside or go sit somewhere warm is most of what you need.

Before anything else: get somewhere safe and lit. A 24-hour gas station, a diner, a hospital lobby, a friend's place nearby. Standing in an unlit doorway or sitting in a dark parking area for an hour is the actual risk here, and it is a much bigger one than the lockout.

If it is genuinely cold, treat that as an emergency rather than an inconvenience — winter nights here get dangerous faster than people expect, particularly if you came out without a coat. And if a child or a pet is shut inside a car or a house, call 911 first. Fire departments carry the same entry tools, they are already staffed, and nobody in this trade will think less of you for calling them instead.

A night call-out is the most expensive way to get into your own home, so it is worth not needing a second one. If the lock was stiff, seized, or fought you before this happened, say so — it is the reason you are standing outside, and it will do it again. If you are down to a single key, that is the moment to have a spare cut.

The other conversation worth having is where a spare could live: a neighbor, a family member nearby, a proper key safe fitted somewhere sensible rather than a key under a mat that every opportunist checks first. Ten minutes of that at the end of an after-hours call-out is what stops the next one happening at all.
