Proving the place is yours before anyone opens it
Being asked to prove you belong there is the single clearest sign you called someone legitimate. It is also the step people are least prepared for.

Why this is not negotiable
Opening a door for someone who cannot show it is theirs means opening doors for anyone who asks confidently enough. Every legitimate operator checks, because the alternative is being the tool in somebody else's burglary — and because the person most likely to be hurt by a lax policy is the customer whose home gets opened next week by someone claiming to be them.
So expect the question, and take it as reassurance rather than an obstacle. The operators who skip it are not doing you a favor. They are demonstrating exactly how they would treat your address if someone else called about it.
What usually satisfies it
The straightforward case is photo ID with the address on it — a driver's license or state ID matching the door being opened. Where the ID address is out of date, which is extremely common after a move, a second document bridges the gap: a lease with your name on it, a utility bill, a bank statement, a piece of mail addressed to you at that address. Digital copies on your phone are generally fine; nobody expects paper on a doorstep at 2am.
For a vehicle it is the registration, title, or insurance document plus matching photo ID, and the VIN gets checked against it. For a business it is usually a combination of ID and something establishing your role — a letterhead, a lease, a business registration, or a manager on the phone who can confirm you.
When you have nothing on you at all
Which is most of the time, because people get locked out precisely when they stepped out without their things. It is a solvable problem and it is worth saying up front on the phone rather than at the door.
Practical routes: a neighbor who knows you and will say so; a landlord, building manager, or superintendent who can confirm the tenancy by phone; mail already inside the property that can be checked once the door is open; an online account on your phone showing the address; or another resident of the household who can produce ID. Reasonable operators work with a combination — the standard is a genuine belief that you belong there, not a specific document. Setting that expectation before the van is dispatched is what stops an emergency lockout call from ending at the doorstep with nobody able to proceed.
The awkward cases, honestly
Some situations are genuinely not a locksmith's call to make. A disputed household — a separation, a roommate falling out, a family argument about who is entitled to be in the property — is a legal question, not a lock question, and the right answer is usually the police rather than a drill. The same goes for anyone asking to be let into a property they do not live in, however sympathetic the reason.
Landlords are a specific version of this and the rules are stricter than most expect. Being the owner does not by itself give you the right to have a tenant's locks opened or changed, and in Massachusetts getting that wrong is a serious matter — who is actually allowed to change the locks on a rented property covers it properly.
