Smart locks, honestly — what they fix and what they cost you

Keys you cannot control. Every person who needs occasional access to your house — cleaner, dog walker, contractor, in-laws, the kid who gets home before you — represents a key you handed out and cannot revoke or audit. A code can be issued for a Tuesday, deleted on Wednesday, and logged in between. That is not a gimmick; it is a real capability mechanical keys simply do not have.

They also effectively end household lockouts, which for a family that has paid for two or three is a return-on-investment calculation with real numbers in it. And auto-lock quietly fixes the most common security failure there is: the door that never got locked at all.

A battery, which will die at the least convenient moment available — typically a cold January night after weeks of the motor straining against a swollen door. Every decent model has a mechanical key override or an external battery contact; know where yours is before you need it. Connected models add a second layer: firmware updates, an account, a manufacturer that may discontinue the app years before the lock wears out.

If that maintenance profile sounds like a chore, the middle path is a keypad lock with no connectivity — codes without the cloud. It covers most of the real-world benefit for most households and fails in fewer ways.

Most smart-lock misery traces to the door, not the device. The same misalignment a human hand compensates for without noticing defeats a small motor completely.

So the honest sequence is door first, lock second: hinges tight, strike aligned, bolt throwing smoothly by hand. Fitting one properly is mostly that prep work — the electronics are the easy half.

Good fit: households with rotating access needs, rental and Airbnb situations, anyone caring for an aging parent whose door may need to open for help, chronic lockout households, and anyone who genuinely will not maintain a spare-key arrangement. Poor fit: a door in bad condition you will not fix, households that will never change the batteries, and anyone expecting a smart lock to make a weak door secure — the bolt is only as strong as the frame it throws into.

It is an honest product with an honest tradeoff, not a categorical upgrade.
