Forgotten the combination to your safe

Before anyone is called: check whether the combination was written down somewhere you have forgotten about — the manual, a warranty card, a note in a filing drawer, a password manager. Many safes ship with a factory-set combination that was never changed, and that number is often printed in the documentation or on a sticker inside the door.

If it is a dial safe, be aware that dialing technique matters more than people think. Overshooting a number and backing up invalidates the attempt on most mechanical dials, so a correct combination entered sloppily reads as wrong. Slow down and follow the sequence exactly before concluding the number is lost. On electronic keypads, resist the temptation to keep guessing — many go into a lockout after a few failed attempts, and some escalate the delay each time.

It depends entirely on the lock, not on how solid the box looks. A mechanical dial can often be manipulated open by someone who knows that specific lock, leaving it fully working afterwards. An electronic lock that has failed — dead battery, corroded contacts, a failed keypad — is frequently a repair rather than a puzzle, and replacing the lock body restores the safe.

Where manipulation is impractical, the route is usually a small, precisely placed drill hole in a known location, used to see or move the mechanism, followed by repair of that hole and replacement of the lock. Done properly the safe returns to service. This is why safe opening is treated as its own specialty rather than as an extension of door lock work — the knowledge is model-specific and the tooling is different.

Safes are built to resist exactly what a frustrated owner will try. Angle grinders and pry bars tend to destroy the contents before they defeat the box, and fire-rated safes are filled with insulating material that behaves unpredictably when cut. Many also carry relockers — deliberate traps that fire and permanently lock the bolts if the mechanism is attacked, converting a solvable job into a much harder one.

The practical result is that a botched attempt usually costs more than the professional opening would have, and sometimes costs the contents as well. If it is worth locking up, it is worth not attacking with a grinder.

The ownership check is stricter here than almost anywhere else in the trade, for obvious reasons. Expect to show ID, and to show something connecting you to the safe or to the property it sits in — a purchase receipt, the manual, insurance paperwork, or documentation of the premises. Inherited safes are common and usually fine, but expect a conversation about the estate rather than a shrug.

Once it is open, change the combination to something you will actually retain and record it somewhere real — a password manager, a sealed note with important documents, a copy with an attorney. And if it is an electronic lock, put a battery change in the calendar, because a flat battery is the single most common reason a working safe stops opening. Gun safes have their own wrinkle on top of all this.
