How a chip key actually talks to your car

A modern car key does two unrelated things. The cut metal blade is mechanical: it lines up the pins in the door and ignition lock exactly the way a house key does. The chip buried in the plastic head is electronic, and it answers a question the car asks every time you try to start it.

That is why a key can fit perfectly, turn smoothly, and still leave you with an engine that cranks and dies or does not crank at all. The lock was satisfied. The immobilizer was not. Hardware stores and kiosks that cut blades cannot do the second half, which is the source of most of the "I already had a key made and it does not work" calls in this trade.

When the key enters the ignition or the fob comes inside the car, a coil around the lock cylinder sends out a brief radio pulse. The chip has no battery — it draws its power from that pulse — and answers with a code. A module in the car compares the answer against the list of keys it has been told to trust. Match, and fuel and spark are enabled. No match, and the car stays exactly where it is.

This is why programming is not an optional extra. Making a new key means adding its code to the car's list of trusted keys, which requires talking to the vehicle through its diagnostic port. Cutting the blade takes a minute; teaching the car is the actual work, and it is most of what cutting and programming a replacement chip key involves on site.

A basic transponder key looks like an ordinary key with a fatter plastic head. A flip key folds the blade into a remote housing and adds lock and unlock buttons, which are a separate radio system from the immobilizer — that is why a dead fob battery can kill your remote while the key still starts the car by hand.

A proximity fob for a push-to-start car takes it further: the car detects the fob nearby and a button replaces the ignition turn. There is nearly always a hidden mechanical blade inside the fob and a hidden slot or a marked spot on the steering column for exactly the situation where the fob battery dies. Worth finding out where yours is before you need it, on a night when you are already late.

Blank fobs and chip keys are easy to buy and cheap to buy badly. The common failures are a chip type that does not match your car's system, a used fob already locked to another vehicle, or a blank that no local equipment can write to. In all three the part is unusable and the money is gone, because the seller has no obligation once it is opened.

If you do want to supply your own, the useful move is to say so before ordering, give the year, make and model, and ask what chip family the vehicle uses. A shop that programs keys daily will tell you what will work. That is a much shorter conversation than the one that starts after a box arrives with the wrong part in it, and it fits alongside the four things that decide what a key costs.
