How long you actually wait for a locksmith

Travel time is the smallest part of it. What decides your wait is where the van already is and what is ahead of you in the queue.

The van is not sitting in a shop waiting for you

People picture a storefront with someone behind a counter. Mobile locksmithing does not work that way — the van is out on jobs, and your wait is the time to finish what is in front of it plus the drive to you. That is why the honest answer to "how soon" is always a question first: where are you, and what is happening?

Around Lawrence the geography helps. Methuen, Andover, North Andover and South Lawrence are all short hops, and I-495 and Route 114 make most of the coverage area reachable quickly outside of rush hour. A call from the middle of the city in the early afternoon is a genuinely fast job. The same call at 5pm on a Friday with traffic backed up at the river crossings is not, and anyone quoting you the same number for both is guessing.

Urgency is a real queue, not a sales tactic

Lockouts are triaged, and it is worth knowing where you sit. A child or a pet shut in a car on a hot or freezing day goes to the front of everything — and in that situation you should call 911 first, because the fire department carries the same tools and will not be finishing another job. A person locked out of their home late at night in bad weather is next. A car locked in a secure garage that you can leave until morning is genuinely lower priority, and saying so gets you a realistic time instead of an optimistic one.

Scheduled work sits differently again. Rekeys, new hardware and lock repairs get booked rather than raced to, which is exactly why the emergency call-out side of the business is separated from the rest of the day's diary in the first place.

What makes a quoted time go wrong

Three things, mostly. The job in front of yours turns out to be harder than it looked — a seized lock or a car that needs a longer programming cycle does not stop halfway because someone else is waiting. Weather: ice and snow slow every part of this, and a cold snap produces a burst of frozen locks and dead fobs all at once. And access problems at your end, where the van arrives on time and then spends twenty minutes finding a way into a gated lot or a parking structure.

You can remove the third one entirely by describing the access when you call. Which entrance, which floor, whether a gate code is needed, whether there is anywhere to park a van. It sounds fussy and it routinely saves more time than any driving does.

Questions worth asking before you agree

Ask for a time window rather than a single number, because a window is a real answer and a single number is usually a hope. Ask whether the person quoting is the person coming, or a call center dispatching to whoever is nearest — that distinction explains a lot of the gap between what gets promised and what turns up.

Ask what happens if they are running late, and whether you get a call. And ask what the job involves once they arrive, because a lockout that takes five minutes and a lock that has to be drilled and replaced are very different visits. Whether anything gets damaged getting you in is the part most people forget to ask about until afterwards.
