Does getting let in damage the door
The overwhelming majority of lockouts end with a lock that still works and a door nobody can tell was opened. Drilling is a last resort, not a default.

What non-destructive entry actually means
The goal is to open the lock using the lock's own mechanism, so that afterwards it works exactly as it did before and your existing keys still fit. On a standard pin tumbler cylinder that usually means picking it, or using a bypass that operates the latch directly without touching the cylinder at all. Nothing is forced, nothing is cut, and there is no evidence afterwards.
On a car the equivalent is a wedge that flexes the door frame a couple of millimeters and a long reach tool that presses the unlock button or lifts the interior handle. Done properly the weatherstrip reseats, the paint is untouched, and the door closes the way it always did. That is the standard the job is supposed to meet, and it is what getting into a locked home or vehicle means when someone knows what they are doing.
When drilling becomes the right answer
Sometimes the lock cannot be opened without destroying it, and pretending otherwise wastes your time. A high-security cylinder with anti-pick pins and a hardened core can be genuinely impractical to pick in any reasonable time. A lock that has already failed mechanically — a broken cam, a snapped spring, a cylinder spinning freely — has nothing left to manipulate. A key snapped off deep in the keyway sometimes has to come out the hard way. And locks that have taken years of salt and winter damp on an exposed door can seize solid.
In those cases drilling the cylinder is the correct call, not a failure. What matters is that it is explained to you before it happens, along with what replacing the cylinder involves, so you are agreeing to it rather than discovering it. Anyone who reaches for a drill first, without trying anything else, is telling you something about how they work.
The damage usually happened before anyone arrived
A large share of the damaged doors in this trade were damaged by the person who lived there. Credit cards snapped off in the gap, screwdrivers levered against the frame, coat hangers pushed down a car window channel into the wiring, doors shouldered until the frame splits. The lock still has to be opened afterwards, and now there is a repair on top.
The pattern is worth naming because it is so consistent: the improvised attempt rarely works, and it converts a short visit into a joinery or body shop job. If you are standing outside your own door right now weighing it up, the honest answer is that waiting is cheaper than trying.
What to expect afterwards
If the lock was picked or bypassed, nothing changes — same lock, same keys, no follow-up needed. If the cylinder had to be drilled, you need a new cylinder, and that is usually fitted on the spot from stock rather than becoming a second appointment. Ask whether the replacement can be keyed to match your existing keys, because on many door sets it can, and that saves you carrying two keys for the same house.
It is also the natural moment to deal with anything else that has been sticking. A lock that was already stiff, a door that has dropped on its hinges, a deadbolt that never threw cleanly — the van is there and the tools are out. And if you were locked out because the key is genuinely gone rather than just inside, proving the place is yours is the other half of the conversation.
